Technical characteristics can make the difference in a surgical linear stapler. Or not?

2015

Background Anastomotic leak (AL) after gastrointestinal surgery is a severe complication associated with relevant short- and long-term sequelae. Most of the anastomosis are currently performed with a surgical stapler that is required to have appropriate characteristics to guarantee good performances. The aim of our study was to evaluate, in the laboratory, pressure resistance and tensile strength of anastomosis performed with different surgical linear staplers, available in the market. Materials and methods We have been studying three linear staplers, with diverse cartridges and staple heights, of three different companies, used for gastrointestinal anastomosis and gastric or intestinal clo…

Pathological mandibular fracture: a severe complication of periimplantitis

2015

Nowadays, dental implant treatment is a very common option for patients even in medical compromised conditons. Some complications related to them have been described. Periimplantitis (PI) is one of the biggest concerns complications of these kind of treatments, probably has a multifactorial aethiology. Usually the consequences of PI are the loss of the implants and prostheses, expenses of money and time for dentists and patients. Very often PI implies the necesity of repeating the treatment . Pathological mandibular fracture due to PI is a severe but infrequent complication after dental implant treatment, especially after PI. In this study we present three cases of mandibular pathologic fra…

Osteonecrosis of jaw (onj): impact of italian patients, and role of italian physicians, dentists, and researchers in the growing evidence of a “new” …

2012

Purpose: Osteonecrosis of jaw (ONJ) is an uncommon but severe complication observed mostly in patients treated with bisphosphonates (BPs) for bone metastases, myeloma, osteoporosis (so called BRONJ, Bisphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis of Jaw), but also with other drugs (bevacizumab, sunitinib, denosumab). The number of cases observed in Italy appears high in comparison with other countries and we present a review of several aspects of ONJ in Italy and the role of Italian health professionals and researchers on increasing knowledge and adequate reporting of ONJ phenomenon; Methods: Literature review about osteonecrosis of jaw (ONJ) with selection of Italian authors and publications, on year…

Candida glabrata meningitis and endocarditis: a late severe complication of candidemia

2014

SummaryWe report an unusual case of Candida glabrata meningitis and endocarditis in a young Caucasian woman with a prosthetic aortic valve and suffering from a dissecting thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm. C. glabrata was isolated from culture of the cerebrospinal fluid. Candida infection of the central nervous system is an uncommon manifestation of disseminated infection due to Candida species. Our case report also highlights the intrinsic resistance of C. glabrata to azoles.

Endoscopic Treatment of Transesophageal Echocardiography-Induced Esophageal Perforation

2018

Perforation of the esophagus is the most severe complication of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and can lead to mediastinitis, pleural empyema, or peritonitis. Currently, the majority of patients receive operative treatment with only 6% treated endoscopically. We report our experience with endoscopic and conservative approaches. We retrospectively reviewed all patients treated for esophageal perforation and included all patients with perforation caused by TEE. All patients with perforation of the esophagus by TEE probe underwent conservative or endoscopic treatment, drainage of pleural and mediastinal retentions, and adjusted to antibiotic therapy. From January 2004 to December 2014 a …
